The 49th Transpac Race will be remembered as the year of the records as both the outright multihull and monohull times for the 2225 nm course from Los Angles to Honolulu have been officially eclipsed.
The ORMA-60 'Mighty Merloe' of HL Enloe USA and his crew, steered by Loïck Peyron FRA, took the line honors with an elapsed time of 04:07:03:30, improving on the 20 year old multihull record of 'Commodore Explorer' set at 05:09:18:26 by more than a day. Lloyd Thornburg's MOD70 'Phaedo3' finished roughly 3 hrs later and Giovanni Soldini's MOD70 'Maserati' took another 3 hours more.
The next record was beaten by the first monohull, the 100-foot 'Comanche' of Jim Clark USA steered by Ken Read USA, navigator Stan Honey USA, setting the monohull course record on 05:01:55:26, over half a day faster than the previous record set by 'Alfa Romeo II' of 05:14:36:20.
