IMOCA Open 60, Class 40, Ultime, Multi 50 - Route du Rhum - Day 2

Tuesday, November 6, 2018
Yesterday, the stormy conditions on the Bay of Biscay with winds around 40kn and big waves from various directions stressed the solo skipper fleet extremely, and some equipment failure were inevitable. Abandonments or repair and safety stops at the Spanish Coast were the consequence. Meanwhile, the multihulls and Open 60 have already passed Cape Finisterre.
François Gabart FRA with his round-the-world-proofed 'Macif' is leading in the Ultime-trimarans. After the abandonment of Sébastien Josse FRA ('Edmond de Rothschild') yesterday, Thomas Coville FRA ('Sodebo') had a similar damage at a side-hull. New on rank 2 is now Francis Joyon FRA ('IDEC') with a 33nm backlog. On rank 3 with a 45nm deficit follows Armel Le Cléac'h FRA with the second foilig trimaran still in the race.
In the Multi 50-trimarans, Thierry Bouchard FRA was 13nm ahead of Armel Tripon FRA.
New in the lead with the Open 60 is now Alex Thomson GBR with his 'Hugo Boss', the only one to circumvent the barrier zone off Cape Finisterre, touching better sailing conditions. 10nm behind followed Vincent Riou FRA on 2nd. The co-favorite Jéremy Beyou FRA ('Charal') - with the only new-design foiling Open 60 was forced to abandon the race with a broken rudder. Isabelle Joschke GER/FRA on rank 7 yesterday evening dismasted and was forced to leave the race.
New on top of the Class 40 is now Yoann Richomme FRA 16nm ahead of Louis Duc FRA.
The race tracker, all ranking lists, a number of onboard videos and all reports (in French and English).
