 VOR65 Ocean Race 2017/18 Leg 3 Day 5
On day 5 of leg 3, the fleet was challenged by the typical Roaring-Forty conditions with a 35-50kn wind and a 10 meter swell providing for top speeds but at the same time loading heavily on the boat and equipment. 'AkzoNobel' of Simeon Tienpont NED was forced to lower the main sail after a failed gybe as among other smaller damages, the track came off the mast. The video. A repair seems to be possible, but a major setback in the rankings is inevitable. Still clearly in the lead are the two boats on the extreme South close to the iceberg exclusion zone i.e. 'Dongfeng' (Charles Caudrelier FRA) and 5nm behind 'Mapfre' (Xavi Fernandez ESP). 'Vestas' sailing on 3rd is 100nm behind.
