IMOCA Open 60, Class 40, Ultime, Multi 50 Route du Rhum Day 3
The depression over the Bay of Biscay that had been forecast at the start of the 3542nm Route du Rhum solo transatlantic race has been making itself felt across the whole fleet with one boat capsized, two dismasted and many sailors electing to seek shelter in French and Spanish ports. The most serious incident of an action-packed 24 hours was the capsize by French former Vendée Globe winner Armel Le Cléac’h FRA with his Ultime 100-ft Maxi Banque Populaire IX.
The leading Ultimes have passed the Acores and are heading direction the Canaries with François Gabart FRA on his 'Macif' in the lead ahead of Francis Joyon FRA ('IDEC') 67nm behind about to reach the trade winds. Thomas Coville FRA ('Sodebo') tries to repair the hull suspension.
In the Multi 50, Thibault Vauchel Camus FRA is now on first ahead of Gilles Lamiré FRA.
Alex Thomson GBR on his 'Hugo Boss' extended his lead in the IMOCA Open 60 on Paul Meilhat FRA ('SMA') to 95nm. Vincent Riou FRA descended on rank 3 with a 109nm deficit. Alan Roura SUI is on the remarkable 5th place 157nm behind Thomson. Sam Davies GBR, the only of the four women starting still underwas was forced to abandon the race as well.
In the Class40, Yoann Richomme FRA has a 35nm advantage on Aymeric Le Chapelier FRA. Jacques Valente SUI on his way up in the rankings is now 35th with a 310nm backlog on the leader.
