The Laser Class a new Class Organisation instead of ILCA
The conflict within the Laser community led to the establishment of 'The Laser Class' in early March. Background: Laser Performance, the English company with 65% market share by far the largest producer, has no longer a license from ILCA, the international class organisation, to produce the one-design dinghies. Six new shipyards have applied for production and now have to submit test boats for assessment. In the meantime, the Australian Laser manufacturer has stepped into the breach and sells its Lasers now also in Europe, all with the ILCA sail insignia instead of the traditional starburst logo. Here is the communiqué of the new Laser Class. Heini Wellmann SUI, long-time President of ILCA, is the first interim president. The aim is to maintain the one-design status of the Class (with the familiar starburst sail logo) and to keep the price of the boats at the previous level: The Australian Lasers cost around EUR 1,500 more! 'The Laser Class' has already won 500 members within a week - Here you can join !. ----- The previous class association ILCA is obviously disapproving this segregation. Here their communiqué , in which they accuse the European manufacturer Laser Performance of not complying with the measurement rules. With 65%, European Laser sailors represent the largest share of ILCA members, but are only represented on the 12-member board with just two votes.
