So far, calm conditions have made for a slow race and it was important to catch the occasional gusts in the best possible way. Meanwhile, the 5 catamarans have passed the island of Favignana in the west of Sicily and are on their way to Pantelleria. The MOD70 trimaran 'Mana' with Riccardo Pavoncelli ITA is leading. The first monohulls are sailing off the north coast of Sicily this morning, with a trio of 'Leopard 3', 'Bullitt' and 'Axciss' pulling away. In the IRC-2 classification, Francois Bopp SUI with his 'Chocolate' (and Volvo Ocean Race winner Bouwe Bekking as strategist) was in the lead at the start, but then fell back to third in the doldrums of the Strait of Messina.
