Ultime Trimaran - Brest-Atlantiques - Brest FRA - Day 31, duel for 2nd and 3rd
After 'Edmond de Rothschild' having crossed the finish line as first - we reported yesterday - , 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) and 'Actual' (Leblevec FRA/Pella ESP) are in the final approach. 530nm before the finish, the two Ultime Trimarans were separated by 48nm only, a duel that will go on to the end of the race. ----- The race tracker, the news and the videos.

Yesterday after almost 29 days underway, 'Edmond de Rothschild' (Franck Cammas/Charles Caudrelier FRA) crossed the finish line off Brest FRA as winners of the inaugural 'Brest-Atlantiques' Regatta. Here the
This morning at 6h UCT, Franck Cammas/Charles Caudrelier FRA together with media-man Yann Riou FRA finished first in the inaugural edition of the Brest-Atlantiques Regatta for Ultime Trimarans. With 734nm in the past 24 hours, the successful team progressed again full-throttle on the final day. ----- The persuing duo passed the Acores yesterday with 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) 80nm ahead of 'Actual' (Le Blevec FRA/Pella ESP). They are expected in Brest on Saturday morning. ----- The
Final race day for 'Edmond de Rothschild' (Franck Cammas FRA/Charles Caudrelier FRA together with their media-man Yann Riou FRA) 535nm away from the finish line in Brest this morning UTC. Rushing straight North at speeds above 30, she will arrive this Tuesday evening. ----- The persuing duo has been decelerated and was over 1'500nm (roughly 3 days) behind with 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) 12nm ahead of 'Actual' (Leblevec FRA/Pella ESP) this morning. ----- The
Slowdown during the past 24 hours as the northern trade winds slackened without major influence on the positions of the three Trimarans: With 1'700nm left to Brest FRA, 'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/ Caudrelier FRA) consolidated their leading place almost 700nm in front of 'Macif' (Gabart/ Gahinet FRA) this morning UTC. 'Actual' (Leblevec FRA/Pella ESP), another 100nm behind, keep an option on rank 2 in the instable weather situation. ----- The
Out of the Doldrums and sailing in the northern trade winds, 'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/Caudrelier FRA) already passed the Cape Verdes Islands yesterday extending the lead on the second-ranked 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) to 600nm this morning UTC. Another 70nm behind, 'Actual' (Levlevec FRA/Pella ESP) is accelerating as well. ----- 2'150nm, roughly 4 days, are left to the finish in Brest FRA. ----- The
As reported yesterday, 'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/Caudrelier FRA) was crossing the innertropical convergence zone and is this morning UTC already in the northern trade winds, progressing at speeds above 30kn. Her advance on rank two has grown on 635nm. 'Actual' (Leblevec FRA/Pella ESP) was still on the 2nd position but the strategic detour to West of 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) seems work, as in a fresher breeze and with a more powerful wind angle, she is over 5kn faster as 'Actual' and her backlog was down on 20nm this morning. ----- The
'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/Caudrelier FRA) crossed the Equator this morning UTC entering now the innertropical convergeance zone. Her advantage on 'Actual' (Leblevec FRA/Pella ESP), the most easterly boat, was 350nm. 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) on 3rd gybed finally North trying to catch-up at least the 400nm backlog on rank 2 with a faster ride. ----- The
'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/Caudrelier FRA), having reached the southern trade winds this morning UTC, extended their lead on 400nm in the light and unconstant winds so far over the South Atlantic. 'Actual' (Leblevec FRA/Pella ESP) remains on rank 2 while 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) is still on a strategic attack going West, presumably veering North today trying to reduce their backlog - 882nm this morning - in a fast ride in well established trade winds. ----- The
Yesterday, 'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/Caudrelier FRA) extended her lead in the stlll moderate and unconstant southern trade winds on 374nm. 'Actual' (Leblevec FRA/Pella ESP) remained on rank 2, while 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) started an attack going West where more favorable conditions seem to prevail. Time will tell whether this strategy pays. ----- The
'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/Caudrelier FRA) extended her lead again in the unconstant winds of the South Atlantic and was 195nm in front of 'Actual' (Leblevec FRA/Pella ESP) on the 2nd position this morning UTC. 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) on 3rd however lost substantially with a 527nm backlog. ----- The
'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/Caudrelier FRA) lost much of her advantage, but remained still 165nm ahead of 'Actual' (Leblevec FRA/Pella ESP) this morning UTC. Another 60nm behind was 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA). ----- The southern trade winds have been very unconstant up to now, and the three Ultime Trimarans are searching for a more stable breeze going West. ----- The
After a comprehensive control of the Ultime-Trimaran 'Sodebo' ashore in Cape Town, Thomas Coville/Jean-Luc Nélias FRA with the media man Martin Keruzoré FRA decided to abandon the race. After the collision with flotsam, their trimaran is in worse conditions than expected, as not only the floater hull without the torn-off rudder, but also the foil daggerboard has been damaged. Repair within a reasonable time is not possible. The
Meanwhile, all four Ultime-Trimarans have reached the most southern point Cape Town with 'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/Caudrelier FRA) in the lead, 285nm ahead of 'Actual' (Le Blevec FRA/Pella ESP) on rank 2, gaining from the repair stop of 'Macif' (Francis Gabart/Gwenolé Gahinet FRA) lasting 6 hours. Having resumed the race, she was only 7nm behind rank 2 this morning UTC. The stop of 'Sodebo' (Coville/Nélias FRA) however will last longer. ----- The fleet is now sailing North along the South African coast avoiding the St-Helena anticyclone. ----- The
After 15 days and 9 hours, 'Edmond de Rothschild' with Franck Cammas/Charles Caudrelier FRA was the first to round Robben Island off Cape Town and is now again heading North direction Brest FRA. The second-ranked 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet FRA) 165nm behind will stop a second time for a repair. 'Actual' (Le Blevec FRA/Alex Pella ESP followed with a 190nm backlog this morning UTC and will take rank 2. 'Sodebo' (Coville/Nélias FRA) will arrive in Cape Town today to try the repair of a floater hull and rudder, decision to be made on site how to proceed. ----- The
After two weeks racing, the four Ultime Trimarans are approaching Cape Town to be reached by Thursday in winds substantially lighter South of the St-Helena anticyclone. 'Edmond de Rotschild' with Franck Cammas/Charles Caudrelier FRA is still leading now with a 100nm advantage on 'Macif' (François Gabart/Gwenolé Gahinet FRA). After the repair stops of these two teams, it is the turn of 'Sodebo' who lost the port rudder after a collision with flotsam. A repair stop has been planned in Cape Town. On rank 3 is therefore now 'Actual' with Yves Le Blevec FRA/Axel Pella ESP 330nm behind the leader. ----- The
After three rough days, the conditions turned to moderate yesterday afternoon easing the high-speed race of the four Ultime Trimanrans direction Cape Town. Stretched over a longer distance, the sequence remained unchanged with 'Edmond de Rothschild' of Franck Cammas/Charles Caudrelier FRA on first 150nm in front of 'Macif' with François Gabart/Gwenolé Gahinet FRA, of 'Sodebo' with Thomas Coville/Jean-Luc Nélias FRA 306nm behind and another 100nm back of 'Actual' with Yves Le Blevec FRA/Alex Pella ESP. ----- The
The rough upwind sailing goes on for the four Ultime Trimarans and inspite of the conservative racing for safety reasons, the multihulls progress at speeds above 30kn. Life on board is not very accommodating as the the
The four teams decided to slow down the pace in the rough conditions of the South Atlantic to avoid damages in the counter waves hitting the big trimarans. The sequence as before Rio has been reestablished with 'Edmond de Rothschild' (Franck Cammas/Charles Caudrelier FRA) 95nm ahead of 'Macif' (François Gabart/Gwenolé Gahinet FRA) and another 80nm back 'Sodebo' (Thomas Coville/Jean-Luc Nélias FRA). ----- The
Extraordinary weather conditions over the South Atlantic provoked an overthrow in the rankings yesterday. The four Ultime Trimarans were separated by 80nm only this morning UTC, practically a restart of the race ! ----- A powerful depression arriving from the continent South of Rio de Janeiro with winds above 40kn prompted the leading 'Sodebo' to head North for safety reasons, and the other teams - including 'Macif' back in the race after the repair stop - remained North of the low pressure system as well. ----- 'Edmond de Rothschild' of Franck Cammas/Charles Caudrelier FRA reclaimed the lead 18nm ahead of 'Sodebo' (Thomas Coville/Jean-Luc Nélias FRA). Another 4nm behind followed 'Macif' (François Gabart/Gwenolé Gahinet FRA). ----- The
First rounding the waypoint off Rio de Janeiro yesterday was 'Macif' with François Gabart/Gwenolen Gahinet FRA (Media: Jérémy Eloy FRA) heading straight to the harbour to get the rudder repaired. After 8 days and 12 hours, the closely following 'Sodebo' with Thomas Coville/Jean-Luc Nélias FRA (Media: Martin Keruzore FRA) veered direction Cape Town crossing the South Atlantic as the new leader. 'Edmond de Rothschild' with Franck Cammas/Charles Caudrelier FRA (Yann Riou FRA) followed 267nm behind as 2nd and another 85nm back was 'Actual' with Yves Le Blevec FRA/Alex Pella ESP (Ronan Gladu FRA). ----- The
The leading 'Edmond de Rothschild' with Franck Cammas FRA did the announced repair stop in Salvador de Bahia to replace the damaged daggerboard. After 13 hours, she resumed racing this morning UTC on the third position. The new leader is 'Macif' with François Gabart FRA, planning to do her pit stop in Rio. 'Sodebo' with Thomas Coville FRA will therefore move on rank 1. ----- The
All four Ultimes made good progress in the solid trade winds along the Brazilian Coast. Today, however some changes in the positions will occur as Frank Cammas FRA on 'Edmond de Rothschild' will head for Salvador de Bahia for the previously announced repair stop. 'Macif' of François Gabart FRA, 79nm behind this morning UTC, will replace the damaged rudder shortly after in Rio. Thomas Coville FRA on his 'Sodebo' will therefore most probably be ahead by tomorrow evening, and also Yves Le Blevec FRA with his 'Actual' will catch-up and be back in the race. ----- The
After 5 days and 3 hours, 'Edmond de Rothschild' with Franck Cammas FRA crossed the Equator. Slowed down in the Doldrums, the gaps between the Ultime Multis increased even more. 'Macif' with François Gabart FRA was 177nm back this morning UTC. 'Sodebo' with Thomas Coville FRA followed 264nm behind Cammas. ----- As we reported, 'Macif' has announced a repair stop in Brazil to fix the broken rudder. Now, the leading 'Edmond de Rothschild' will head ashore as well to mend the damaged keel. ----- The
No substantial changes in the Atlantic Race of the Ultime-Trimarans during the past 24hrs with Franck Cammas FRA on 'Edmond de Rothschild' consolidating their lead with a 45nm advantage on 'Macif' of François Gabart FRA. 179nm behind Cammas FRA is 'Sodebo' of Thomas Coville FRA. ----- By this evening, the leading trio will reach the Doldrums. ----- The
This morning UTC, 'Edmond de Rothschild' (Cammas/Caudrelier/Riou FRA) had a 46nm lead on 'Macif' (Gabart/Gahinet/Eloy FRA). 'Sodebo' (Thomas Coville FRA) on 3rd was 170nm behind. Propelled by the trade winds, the four Ultime Trimarans keep on racing South at speeds exceeding 30kn direction waypoint Rio de Janeiro BRA. ----- The
