IMOCA Open 60 - Vendée Globe 2016/17 - Day 71
Monday, January 16, 2017
The race to the Vendée Globe finish line became an all-out, neck-and-neck sprint as after several days of slow progress north in light winds, Armel Le Cléac'h and Alex Thomson are now chasing towards the home straight of the solo round the world race in winds of up to 30 knots. The margin between them now 1'000 nm from Les Sables off the Portugues coast was steadily decreasing, and Alex Thomson GBR, covering 560 nm during the last 24 hours, is now only 71 nm behind the leader Armel Le Cléac'h FRA. Fabrice Amedeo FRA and Arnaud Boissières FRA rounded Cape Horn during the past night in stormy winds, and this morning, the youngest and oldest skippers of the fleet, Alan Roura SUI and Rich Wilson USA, will pass the most southern point of the Americas as well.
