IMOCA Open 60 Vendee Globe 2016/17 Day 3
Yesterday, the winds off Portugal slackened faster as predicted and Alex Thompson GBR ('Hugo Boss') benefitting from the better conditions failed with his attack in the East after having reduced the gap on the leading Armel Le Cléac'h FRA ('Banque Populaire') to a few miles. The fresh winds come from the West now and Thomson GBR is down on rank 7 again. Le Cléac'h FRA accelerated as first and extended his lead on 21 miles this morning UTC. Jean-Pierre Dick FRA ('Virbac') and 5 miles behind Paul Meilhat FRA ('SMA') are now the first challengers. Alan Roura SUI 219 miles back keeps the 24th place.
