Industry News - West Marine's revenue up, profits down

Industry News - West Marine's revenue up, profits down Revenue rose, but profits fell in the third quarter at West Marine and the retailer saw its operating results decline after seven quarters of improvement. Net revenue was $172.5 million for the 13-week period that ended Oct. 2, an increase of 2.6 percent from $168.2 million in the same quarter a year earlier. Comparable-store sales for the Watsonville, Calif.-based company rose $5.2 million, or 3.7 percent. A driver of this growth was gains in sales to wholesale customers through the company's stores. Net income was $7.4 million, or 32 cents a share, compared with $8.5 million, or 38 cents a share, a year earlier. For the year to date, earnings per share were $1.44, compared with $1.13 for the same period last year. Income before taxes for the quarter was $7.6 million, a decrease of $1.3 million, or 14.8 percent, from $9 million a year earlier. The release.

Industry News - Dealers think market has bottomed out, survey finds

Industry News - Dealers think market has bottomed out, survey finds Results of a boating industry survey of 432 dealers indicate that the market at retail is bottoming but not yet rebounding. On most measures of performance, business trends remain tough. New boat sales are still weak and dealers remain concerned about the credit environment and profitability levels. At the same time, the used boat market continues to strengthen, and dealer feedback suggests that this is more of a reflection of true demand than distressed selling activity. Second, the level and aging of dealer inventory appears to be in very good shape. Third, while still depressed, readings on financing, profitability and dealer sentiment are moving in a more positive direction. The release.

Industry News - West Marine reports 8-percent increase in Q2 sales

Industry News - West Marine reports 8-percent increase in Q2 sales West Marine today reported net sales of US$233.4m for its second quarter ended July 3, 2010, an 8.4 per cent increase over the same period a year ago. Same-store sales increased by 9.4 per cent, or US$17.3m, and stores opened in 2009 generated an additional US$8.8m.
In specific categories, sales in its Store segment rose US$18.2m, or 9.2 per cent, to US$212.7m, while Port Supply increased sales by US$0.4m, or 4.3 per cent, to US$9.3m. Net sales of its Direct Segment fell by US$0.4m, or 2.9 per cent, to US$11.5m.
West Marine CEO Geoff Eisenberg said that unusually warm weather in the US northeast prompted boaters to prepare their boats early. The company also noticed an impact by the Gulf oil spill in the southeastern US. "During the second quarter, we experienced a decrease in sales of products typically used by recreational boaters and fishermen," he said. "However, this was almost completely offset by sales of products which appear to be connected with fighting the oil spill." The full release.
